When you ask preppers what\u2019s one of the essential survival kits they own, most will answer a bug out bag<\/a> (BOB).<\/p>\n

Well\u2026they\u2019re not wrong. Everything you need to survive for at least 72 hours<\/a> after you\u2019re forced out of your home is literally in this bag.<\/p>\n

Since this emergency kit is a major lifesaver, you can\u2019t afford to make mistakes when building one. But in reality, they can\u2019t always be avoided, whether you\u2019re an experienced prepper or a newbie to prepping.
What you can do is to be aware of these errors and try your best to prevent them.<\/p>\n

Here are 9 common bug out bag mistakes to watch out for:<\/p>\n

Packing Too Much Gear and Supplies<\/h2>\n

In a survival situation, it\u2019s basic human instinct to stuff all the prepper gear and survival supplies you can find in one bag. But the last thing you want is for your bug out bag to weigh you down en route to your destination.<\/p>\n

Remember that the sole purpose of a BOB is to help you reach your bug out location<\/a> in one piece, not to sustain you forever or until things go back to normal. There\u2019s a bigger bag for that containing more supplies than your BOB\u2014the INCH<\/a> or \u201cI\u2019m Never Coming Home\u201d bag. It\u2019s meant to help you survive for an extended period.<\/p>\n

So you\u2019re not tempted to bring your entire house with you in a backpack, start prepping the bare essentials<\/a> and add in multipurpose items later on<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You might have to travel long distances, so you better avoid backaches. Your bug out bag should be no more than 25 percent of your body weight unless you\u2019ve packed on the pounds.<\/p>\n

Not Loading Enough Water<\/h2>\n

Quick survival fact:<\/a> a person can only last 3 days without drinking water. It goes without saying that you need to prepare enough water<\/a> for an emergency. It should be the priority above anything else.<\/p>\n

The Federal Emergency Management Agency<\/a> even recommends drinking at least half a gallon of water each day, so don\u2019t think about cutting off your water consumption unless you want to die of dehydration<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, loading water in your bug out bag<\/a> is gonna be a different situation. Why? Carrying more than 2 gallons of water for 3 or 5 days could literally break your back, especially if you\u2019re walking the whole way<\/a>. But that doesn\u2019t mean you shouldn\u2019t pack potable water.<\/p>\n
